Introducing RWTH Aachen University

Introducing Carbon4Minerals consortium member - RWTH Aachen University.

RWTH Aachen University is the leading technical university in Germany. RWTH exploits strong research networks and the intellectual curiosity of its staff to address bold scientific questions, transfer forefront knowledge and drive innovative discoveries that impact global challenges.

The Institute of Building Materials (IBAC) within the faculty of Civil Engineering is amongst the biggest institutes of construction materials science in Europe. IBAC has more than 70 years of experience at the interface of fundamental research and engineering applications of construction materials. Researchers are specialised on novel binder formulations (supplementary cementitious materials and alternative binders), novel concrete concepts e.g. textile reinforced concrete as well as concrete repair solutions and research on corrosion processes.

In Carbon4Minerals, IBAC has two main scientific contributions:

  • First, under the supervision of Prof. Anya Vollpracht , the environmental compatibility of the materials produced in this project is measured. This will ensure that these materials can be safely used as construction materials.

  • Second, under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Matschei, and Dr. Fabien Georget, a reactive transport model for carbonation curing is developed. This model will provide the knowledge necessary for a rational optimization of the carbonation curing process.

  • In addition, IBAC will also participate in developing co-learning activities to disseminate the results of the project.
