Carbon4Minerals at the 2nd MC3 Conference in Tokyo

Carbon4Minerals was represented at the 2nd International Conference on Mineral Carbonation for Cement and Concrete (MC3), held from 28 to 30 September 2026 at the University of Tokyo in Japan. The event brought together researchers, engineers and industry representatives working on mineral carbonation and its role in supporting carbon neutrality in the cement and concrete sector.

As part of the scientific programme, on 30 September 2026, Fernanda Belizario-Silva from ETH Zurich presented the work “A Framework for Accounting for CO₂ Management Services Provided by Mineral Carbonation Products,” co-authored with Guillaume Habert. On the same day, Mingyu Wang from RWTH Aachen University presented “Carbonation-induced evolution of steel slag compacts revealed by in-situ synchrotron X-ray microtomography,” co-authored with Elsa Qoku, Fabien Georget, Eranga Jayawickrama, Peter Nielsen, Florian Fusseis and Thomas Matschei.

The conference programme covered a broad range of topics relevant to mineral carbonation, including carbonatable binders, CO₂ treatment of solid wastes, carbonation hardening of concrete products, supplementary cementitious materials, mineralisation mechanisms, life-cycle assessment and CO₂ uptake quantification. Further themes addressed the utilisation and durability of CO₂-treated and carbonated materials in concrete.

Participation in MC3 provided an opportunity to present research connected to Carbon4Minerals and engage with the international community working on mineral carbonation. The conference offered a dedicated setting for scientific exchange on current developments and approaches in the field.
